Pine Crest & the Ridge · Domestic and small commercial

Old wiring, explained before anyone picks up a screwdriver.

We survey the board, write the scope, agree the power-off window with you, then test and certify. No work starts on a verbal guess, and nothing gets opened up without you knowing what it costs.

Covering
Pine Crest, Ridgeway, Halton Fields and the surrounding valley villages.
Working hours
Weekdays 07:30–17:00. Evening isolation windows arranged for occupied homes.
Every job ends with
Test results, a certificate, labelled circuits and a photo record of concealed work.

If the power is off right now

Three checks to make before you call anyone

Half the callouts we take are solved in two minutes by the person already standing in the house. Work through these first — if the power stays off, note what you found and send it with your enquiry.

  • Check 01

    Is it only your house?

Look at a neighbour’s lights or the street lighting. A whole-street outage is a network fault and no electrician can restore it — it is your supplier’s job.

  • Check 02

    Which switch has tripped?

Open the consumer unit cover and look for a single switch sitting out of line. Note the label next to it. That label tells us which circuit is faulty before we arrive.

  • Check 03

    Unplug, then reset once

Unplug everything on the dead circuit, reset the switch once, and plug items back one at a time. If it trips again on the same appliance, the appliance is the fault, not the wiring.

What we take on

Six lanes of work, priced the same way every time

Each lane below lists what is actually included and roughly how long the property is affected. If your job spans two lanes, we quote them as one scope so there is no second mobilisation charge.

01

Full & partial rewires

New circuits, back boxes, earthing and bonding, accessories and making good. Partial rewires are staged room by room so the house stays liveable throughout.

3–9 days
Staged option

02

Consumer unit upgrades

Replacement board with individual RCBO protection, surge protection where the supply allows, full circuit testing and a labelled schedule of every way.

1 day
Power off 4–6 hrs

03

EV charge points

Load assessment on the existing supply first, then a dedicated protected circuit, cable route agreed with you, and commissioning with the unit’s own app.

Half day
Survey first

04

Fault finding

Tracing nuisance trips, dead circuits, buzzing switches and damp-related faults. Diagnosis is charged by the hour and quoted separately from any repair.

2–4 hrs
Same-day slots

05

Lighting design & install

Layouts drawn to how the room is used, dimmable circuits grouped sensibly, outdoor and garden runs in armoured cable with weatherproof terminations.

1–3 days
Layout supplied

06

Landlord & sale certificates

Periodic inspection with a written report, coded observations explained in plain language, and a clear split between what must be fixed and what can wait.

3–5 hrs
Report in 48 hrs

How a job runs

Four stages, and you approve the end of each one

Electrical work goes wrong when the scope moves halfway through. This sequence exists so that nothing is opened, chased or isolated before you have seen it in writing.

  1. Stage 01

    Survey

We open the board, test the incoming supply, check earthing and bonding, and look at the loft and under-floor routes. Around an hour, and it belongs to you whether or not you book.

  2. Stage 02

    Written scope

A line-by-line list of circuits, accessories and making good, with the price held for thirty days. Anything optional is listed separately so you can take it out.

  3. Stage 03

    Isolation window

We agree in advance which days the power is off and for how long. Fridges, home working and medical equipment are planned around before the first cable is pulled.

  4. Stage 04

    Test & certify

Full testing, a labelled schedule of circuits, certificates issued, and photographs of anything now hidden behind plaster or under boards.

Before we quote

The eight things that change the price

These are the details we look for on the survey. Knowing them helps you compare quotes properly — if another quote is much cheaper, it usually means one of these was not checked.

01
Earthing arrangementHow the supply is earthed decides whether extra bonding is needed at the water and gas entry points.
02
Main fuse ratingA 60A head limits what you can add. An EV charger or electric shower may need the supplier involved first.
03
Cable type in wallsRubber or fabric insulation means a rewire, not a board swap. Modern PVC may only need remedial work.
04
Floor constructionChipboard, solid concrete or original boards change how long cable routes take by whole days.
05
Loft and cellar accessUsable access from above or below removes most of the chasing, and most of the replastering.
06
Circuit countRooms are not circuits. We count ways on the board, then count what the house actually needs.
07
Making goodWhether we plaster, fill and redecorate, or leave a clean chase for your decorator, is priced explicitly.
08
Occupied or emptyWorking around a household is slower than an empty property, and the quote should say which one it assumes.

Field notes

Two recent jobs, and what they taught us

Written up the week they finished, including the parts that were harder than expected.

Close view of a consumer unit with neatly dressed coloured wiring terminated into circuit breakers

Ridgeway · Terraced house

A board swap that turned into three repairs

The customer wanted a modern consumer unit. Testing before we started found a borrowed neutral between the upstairs lighting and the landing circuit — invisible until each circuit gets its own protection. We fixed the neutral, re-terminated two junction boxes buried above the ceiling, and only then fitted the board. The extra work was quoted and approved on the day, because replacing the board without it would have caused constant tripping that looked like a faulty new unit.

Warm pendant light bulbs glowing against a dark ceiling after a lighting circuit installation

Halton Fields · Kitchen extension

Lighting grouped by task, not by ceiling

The original layout put nine downlights on one switch. We split it into three circuits — worktop, table and general — so the room can be dim without being dark in the wrong places. Dimming modules were chosen to match the lamps rather than the other way round, which avoided the flickering that usually follows a retrofit.

Questions we are asked weekly

Straight answers

How old does a fuse board have to be before it needs replacing?

Age alone is not the test. A board with rewireable fuses or a single trip covering the whole house is worth replacing because one fault takes out everything. A board that is twenty years old but has individual protection and passes testing can stay. We test first and tell you which of the two you have.

Can a rewire be done in stages while we live in the house?

Yes, and most of ours are. We work floor by floor or room by room, leaving each finished section energised and certified before opening the next. It costs a little more overall because of the repeated set-up, but it avoids moving out and it spreads the payments.

How long will the power actually be off?

For a consumer unit change, four to six hours in one block. For a staged rewire, typically two to four hours per section rather than whole days. We agree the window before the job and keep at least one socket circuit live wherever the existing wiring allows.

Will my supply take an EV charger?

Usually, but it depends on the main fuse and what else draws heavily — an electric shower, a heat pump, an induction hob. We measure the existing demand rather than guess. Where the supply is tight, a load-limiting charger often solves it without an upgrade to the incoming supply.

My inspection report came back with codes I do not understand. Can you explain it?

Bring it to the survey. We go through each observation and separate the items that are genuinely unsafe from those that are simply not to current practice. You should never be asked to pay for work on the basis of a code nobody has explained to you.

Do I get paperwork at the end, and what should it contain?

Every job ends with a certificate listing the circuits, the test results and the person who carried out the work. For notifiable work you should also receive confirmation that it has been registered with building control. If a quote does not mention certification, ask why before you accept it.
